Bullies are my FUEL.

First let me just say how much this chick rocks:

The writer bully who authored that letter should be ashamed. ASHAMED. Ms. Livingston, please use it as fuel. {I know firsthand that hurtful words work like nothing else!} Or don’t. Either way, you rock and I’m glad you called this bully out!

Did I ever share with you guys some bullying I received after I wrote that post about how running 13.1 miles IS most certainly called a half-marathon in my book, regardless of whether it’s on your own, in a virtual race or in an organized race? Hmm, I don’t think I did. Well, yeah, it was pretty harsh. Here ya go…

blog bullySo apparently there is this site called ______________. {I’m most certainly not giving them any publicity or hits by naming them. Though I seriously thank them for linking my post. I had mad traffic that day and still continue to because of it.} Basically what they do is poke fun of blogs/blog posts for whatever XYZ reason that comes to their pea-sized brains.

GET A FRIGGIN’ LIFE. Have y’all nothing better to do than to make fun of us? To make fun of me for being excited that I ran 13.1 miles?! Something I never, never, nevah evah thought I’d be able to do?

I never said I was hardcore. I never said people don’t appreciate my accomplishments. Hell, you guys give me love EVERY DAMN DAY and I tell you how much I thank you for it and what it means to me. But if you didn’t, even if no one said a word, I ALONE would be appreciative of my accomplishments. That’s all I need really–is for ME to be proud of ME. It took me about 25 years+ to get to that point. Self-love, self-esteem–now that’s something–I can’t get from any anybody else.

I didn’t make this person read my blog. I don’t make anyone read it. Not even my husband. I put it all out here. It’s my diary basically. Here for you all to see. Honest. Exciting. Funny. Inspiring. Sad. Random. Ranting. Pissed. Hopeful. And maybe to you, Miss I Just Can’t, aggravating. {And what’s your name about anyhow? You Just Can’t What? Stop being a cowardly bully typity typing from the safety of your computer screen while you sip your haterade and make fun of people because you don’t know how to deal with your own sorry life?} But this is it, chick. If you don’t want to read Cherie Runs This, get to steppin’. Haha, I think I’ll be okay. 😉

Now, onto happier things–

I registered for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Half Marathon yesterday!! Yeeee hawwww! I’m so excited! I was super close to registering for the full, seeing as how I’d totally have time to prepare for it by May 2013, but I stuck with the half. I’ll get to the full in due time!

I know this because I saw this in the store the other day…

And of course promptly returned on payday during my lunch break to get it….

I have been reading it every night before bed. So yup, my time will come and I’ll be ready! At least mentally… 😀

I’ll also have some more complimentary shoes to run in…YES, haha another free pair. This time, they’re coming from the great folks at Mizuno Running. I was selected to participate in the Mezamashii Run Project and I’ll be reviewing these beauties soon as they’re on their way!

Alright peeps. That’s enough about bullying, ranting, running, and fabulous fun from me for today.

My lasting PSA to you: Don’t be a bully. And if you are being bullied, take it as fuel and run with it. That is all.

Foodie Penpals: September 2012 box from Michelle!

It’s time for another Foodie Penpals Reveal Day, y’all! I seriously got some great stuff this month and could not wait to dive into all of it.

I also think Michelle must have had ESP when shopping for my items. I mean, all I said was I generally like to receive healthy foods, some treats and I have no allergies or special dietary restrictions. Have at it. Then, she somehow got me the most awesome stuff that I’ve been wanting for a while now!

The one thing that I literally screamed out loud about were those little packs of YumEarth Organic Gummi Bears. I had seen a gigantic bag of them at Marshall’s a couple weeks ago, but could not justify the purchase. I still pined after them, though. Just when I thought I was going to have to make the trek back to the store to get them {which is never a good idea at Marshall’s because stuff disappears if you don’t get it when you first see it}, they appeared in my box!!

Also included in my box that I’m totally stoked about were:

–A pound of Tierra Farm Certified Organic Pistachio Mulberry Granola
–A jar of Tierra Farm Certified Organic Maple Almond Butter
–Homemade Mixed Berry Jam
–Primal Strips Thai Peanut Vegan Seitan Jerky
–Primal Strips Hickory Smoked Vegan Soy Jerky
–Primal Strips Hot & Spicy Vegan Shiitake Mushroom Jerky

I am one happy Foodie. 😀 Thanks, Michelle!

Oh, and if you’d like to see the box that I sent to my Foodie Penpal, Camilla, check out her post about it here. 😀

The Lean Green Bean

Do you want to get a fun box of goodies and participate in Foodie Penpals, too? Here’s how:

-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.

-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!

-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!

-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)

-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.

-Foodie Penpals is open to US & Canadian residents.  Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.

If you’re interested in participating for September, please CLICK HERE to fill out the participation form and read the terms and conditions.

You must submit your information by October 4th as pairings will be emailed on October 5th!

Sub 10 Club: Knocking on the door.

So there’s this club that I’m itchin’ to belong to. I’ve been trying to get in for about two years and never have I been so close as I am now. Ahhh yes, the Sub 10 Club.

I almost got in this past Thursday.

7 seconds. Seven more seconds and mile one of my 5k after work that day would’ve gotten me in. I would’ve had a 9:59 had I pushed myself a little bit harder.

I seriously was running as fast and hard as I could. I purposely didn’t look down at my Nike+ GPS or my Polar FT7 {yes, I wear both} from the time I started running until I saw Mile Marker 1 on the trail. I told myself, just start running, note your form, breathe, push out of your comfy turtle pace and see what you can do.

Mind you, this is was my previous mile PR that I had last Tuesday:

Yup–a 10:15. So I was aiming for anything better than that even if I didn’t make the Sub 10 Club just yet. So I’m definitely proud of the 10:06!! But as soon as I saw it, I was like, “For real? That’s it. I could’ve sworn I ran that in like, 8 minutes!!” Haha, nope. I only thought I was going that fast. But I’ll get there!

My next outdoor run on the trail will be this Tuesday. I decided to make my outdoor runs be on Tuesdays and Thursdays after work. {Yay, for my body acclimating to this new work schedule and actually feeling like moving once the clock strikes 5pm!} Hopefully I’ll get into the club then! I have a feeling I will because I finally got some new shoes! Brighter shoes make you run faster, didn’t you know?! 😉 Take a look at these!

Nike Flex Siren Red
I saw them in the store and it was love at first sight.

Nike Flex Siren Red
Laced them up once I got home.

Siren Red Nike Flex

And then I was ready to run!

I know you knowledgeable shoe people out there are like, “Wait a sec. Those aren’t for overpronators. You’re an overpronator, Cherie. What gives?” Well, the other day when I went running, I put on my trusty stability shoes. My leg/knee started killing me. Midrun I switched to my Nike FlyKnits and felt pretty good. Then two days later when I was getting ready to run after work, I realized I had packed my Brooks Pure Cadences. {I think they’re supposed to be stability but they don’t really feel like it.} Anyhow, my knee felt pretty awesome yet again. So when I saw these beautiful Siren Red Nike Flex shoes, knowing they weren’t stability shoes either, I still scooped them up. I still plan on heading to Fleet Feet very soon to get an assessment and talk to them about their take on all of this, but for now, I’m just going to run in what feels good and isn’t angering my ITB. 🙂

Blue Brooks Pure Cadence

And I’m just going to run and work on getting into that club. Soon enough. And I’m still a runner either way.

What’s the next running goal you’re chasing after?

I love you cherry much…Cheribundi giveaway!

I love cherries. {Even though I get slightly peeved when people mispronounce my name and call me Cherry. Nope–try again. Haa.}

I was so pumped to come home from running errands, all the while wearing my “I love you cherry much” shirt,

Click the picture to see why I’m shocked in the dressing room…

to find a box of Cheribundi waiting for me on my porch!

I opened it up and found twelve bottles with these five different flavors inside:

I’ve heard all my blogger friends talk about how much they love Cheribundi, so it was time to find out for myself.

I liked what I read in the information they sent me–it’s great for muscle recovery, aches and pains, helps with sleeping, and aids in fighting heart disease. I never knew cherries were so good for me! Heck, even Dr. Oz approves, lol. I was all in.

I tried Tru Cherry after my run.

Skinny Cherry while catching a few rays during half time.

And hubby tested out the Whey Cherry after his workout.

I’m not a chocolate cherry person at all, so I’ve yet to try that flavor, haha. That flavor combo has always turned my stomach so that kind will go to hubby for certain! I’m also not super big on ginger, but I think I’ll still like that flavor–I just haven’t opened it yet. I’m saving my Whey Cherry until after my next weights session, but I’m sure I’ll like it, too. So right now, Skinny Cherry is my fave! Tastes just like the Tru Cherry to me and I save calories. 😀

So……WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY SOME?

Duh! That’s probably why you checked out this post today. 😉 I ain’t mad atcha. I’d want to get my hands on some of this stuff, too.

I’m a Working Girl.

I have just concluded my first week at the new job and I am so very ecstatic to report that I love it!!

Some awesomeness:

Being in Chapel Hill again…

Wearing cute outfits to work…

My own desk and office…

Access to all the free Keurig I could ever want…

I love my boss, my coworkers, the job itself, the characters residents, my benefits, the perks, the M-F/hours, my paycheck, etc. Happy. Happy. Happy.

What do I not love?

Losing my beloved sleep. Good gracious, I don’t know how y’all have been doing it all this time. {And if y’all thought the hubby and I pushed back the whole having kids things before, it’s WAY off now. I don’t have enough me or we time as it is!! Screw that. We are BEYOND fine with it just being the both of us!!! Having kiddos is NOT for everyone, so please, please, please don’t give me the whole, “Wait ’til you have kids!” Umm, no thanks. For reals!!}

For the past six years, I definitely have not been working 42.5 hours a week {which is what I’ll now be doing–YAY for overtime every week–time and a half!!!!! Woot!!!}. At Dick’s Sporting Goods, I was LUCKY to get 10 hours a week. So obviously saying I’m not used to being at work for 8.5 hours EVERY day, is quite an understatement.

I’m used to a four hour shift here and there, not starting until 11am in the morning, staying up until 2am, and having ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD to get my workouts done.

All of that has ended effective immediately. Now, I’m a working girl. 😀

But what I don’t want to be is a Weekend Warrior. You know the type. Work all week, forgetting all about exercise {or just not making time for it} and then hitting it hard Saturday & Sunday. Clearly fitness is muy importante to me, so I MUST figure out a way to fit it in. And again, spare me the “do it before you go to work in the morning–you know, when you first wake up!” Eff that ish. NO WAY. Let’s just agree to disagree that some of you are morning people, some of us ARE NOT. 😀 As it stands, I’m currently going to bed roughly at 8:30pm/8:45pm and waking up at 6am. {I’m one of those who doesn’t run on less than 9 hours of sleep. AT ALL.} I leave the house no later than 7:30am and have to be at work at 8am. I work until 5pm, with a 30 minute lunch in there. Sooooooo, seeing as how I don’t want to go running at lunch {no showers avail and I don’t want to sit in my sweaty stench for four hours}, I MUST MUST MUST workout after work.

I said this to myself Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It wasn’t until Friday that I seriously had enough energy to lace up my shoes and get in a good run {pain-free, I’m happy to report!}.

I can’t call this blog Cherie Runs This if I don’t do it! I preach state time and time again how being tired or saying you don’t have time are not good excuses; I need to follow my own advice. Thank goodness for my clean-eating though; I didn’t gain a pound this entire week! I actually lost some. Though, I can’t say I gained any muscle either. 😦

I’m sure some of this tiredness is just my body getting acclimated to working long hours and getting up early. I’m hoping that soon I can be a little more lax and push bed time to about 9:30pm and work that fitness in there after or before dinner. I certainly know that stopping is not an option–I’m too close now!

Again, I must say that I am LOVING this whole “weekends-off thing.” Is this how the rest of y’all have been living?! It’s glorious!!! Hubby and I took an impromptu mid-afternoon trip to The Eddy Pub yesterday for beers. HEAVEN. First day of Autumn {the BEST season}, crazy sunshine, gentle breezes & views of the river. I was quite content. And I could get used to this. 😀

So yes, yes, I will settle nicely back into my usual way of doing things. It’s just taking a little time. I’ve got this. Cherie still Runs This.

Did you ever have a sudden schedule change in your life? How’d you fit in fitness?

Banana Protein Waffles, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds & a Football Workout. Separate–equally fun.

Hey all! I made two delicious things today and have gotten a few requests for the recipes. Soooo, out of the kindness of my heart, I’m actually blogging during my beloved NFL games today! RARE!

These things don’t go together at all, but in the hopes of saving a lil time, I’m putting them both in one post. Have at it!

banana protein waffles

Banana Protein Waffles
makes approx. 12

2 eggs
1 cup dry oats
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup cottage cheese
1/2 almond milk
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 packet of stevia
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until thoroughly mixed and smooth{ish}.
Spray waffle iron with non-stick spray and cook accordingly to your waffle maker’s specific times/directions.
Mine, for instance, is two minutes.
Top however you’d like–enjoy!

********************************

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
yield varies by size of pumpkin

Pumpkin seeds scooped from inside of pumpkin
1 tablespoon Earth Balance {or butter if you prefer}
salt to taste

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Scoop all of the seeds from the inside of the pumpkin and place on a non-stick sprayed baking sheet. {If you don’t like strings of the pumpkin on your seeds, pick them off. I like the taste, so I keep them on.}
Divide the tablespoon of Earth Balance between the seeds, dispersing little bits of it somewhat evenly across the seeds.
Sprinkle with salt. Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes. Check on them often, as all ovens are different. Remove when they are light golden brown and crunchy to taste. Salt again if you prefer.

Enjoy!!
Back to my football watching, I go.

OH, which reminds me–

I created a football workout if you’d like to workout along with me today! Last Sunday, Sarah R. had the idea of doing 15 pushups for every touchdown we saw. After I ended up doing 255 pushups last week, I knew I needed to expand on it a little bit to get the rest of my body involved!

football drinking game but exercise instead

It’s called the Football Workout. Simple enough, haa. If you want to play along, use the hashtag #FootballWorkout on Twitter and let us know how it’s going! I only watch NFL, but it will work on Saturday with college football, too!

Okay, now back to my beloved games. 😀

Greek Goodness: Chobani Yogurt Giveaway!

I teased about it the other day, so I couldn’t keep you waiting for very long.

That’s right! It’s time for a Chobani giveaway! I’ve known for the past month that I wanted to do this, but the vacation, the job searching and life in general were holding me up a bit. But once I received my box of deliciousness from the good folks at Chobani the other day, I had to kick it into high gear!

I was ecstatic to see this waiting for me! I had been out on my interview and just knew that while I was away it would be delivered! I saw all the sunshine beaming down {it’s still friggin’ hot in NC} and thought my yogurt would be ruined! I mean, it was just in a box–it didn’t look cold at all.

Never shall I doubt the people at Chobani. I shouldn’t have had any fear–this box was stuffed with like, fourteen solid blocks of ice packs and crazy insulated!  {REUSABLE ice packs, that is. I think I was just as excited to have those! As a runner, I’m constantly needing to ice something. Now I’ll never run out of packs!}

Nonetheless, I moved quickly and got these tubs in my fridge! I was sent Vanilla Chocolate Chunk to test out, since I had never tried that flavor, and most importantly–my favorite flavor–Plain!! {I like to watch my sugar intake and with the Plain, I can do just that! I sweeten it with fruits like wild blueberries most times.} So, the VCC would normally have been super delicious to me, but now that I’ve weaned myself off of flavored yogurts, anything sweetened tastes WAY TOO sweet for me.  Hubs now has 3 tubs of VCC and I’m sticking to my Plain! 🙂

chobani yogurt

Plain Greek with wild blueberries, chia seeds, and a smidgen of granola–ohhh yeah, that’s my Chobani Time!

When I do feel like sprucing it up a little bit more than that, I’ll make fun desserts like these:

But enough about me and my Plain Jane Greek yogurt lovin’.

Would YOU like to WIN A CASE OF ASSORTED {all the fun flavors y’all!} CHOBANI? Well, duh. Of course you would!

*****************************************
Here’s how to enter!

I’m going to make this the simplest giveaway ever.

Leave me a comment below answering the following question and that will count as your entry! That’s it. {One comment per person}

What is your favorite flavor of Chobani yogurt?

This giveaway is open to US residents only and will end on Wednesday, September 19th at 11:59 PM ET!!! The winner will be announced Thursday, September 20th. I will use random.org to select a winner and will contact him/her. The winner’s information will be forwarded to Chobani and they will ship him/her the case of yogurt!

A new job & new beginnings.

The cat is out of the bag on Twitter and my FB page, so I might as well shout it out here, too.

you did what?!

I quit Dick’s Sporting Goods and I have a new job!!!

In truth, I left Dick’s a little over a month ago. In short, I pretty much could no longer handle the dicks at Dick’s. Haa. Or just the one. Remember the way I was treated? {If you scroll near to the end of that post, you’ll see just what I’m talking about.} It’s sad to let one person lead me to make the decision to leave–especially in this economy–but I had to.

I loved the store, my coworkers, my job, and the assistant managers. But when the big boss man doesn’t care about fitness, which was my sole purpose for being there, it made it ever-so-increasingly difficult to do my job. 😦 Add to that the commute, the lack of hours, the nights, the weekends, the no vacation or sick pay, and the position not being as fitness focused as I wanted {Dick’s Sporting Goods Certified Fitness Trainers DO NOT get to train anybody}, sadly, I knew I had to go.

And why does a Certified Fitness Trainer have to work on bicycles anyway?!

So this was a ROUGH past month and a half. Finances were tight. TIGHT. My self confidence dipped to the lowest of the lows. I felt like I’d never find a job again. I was oh-so-close to getting a sweet position as a Wellness Director for a swanky retirement community but lost out. And then the self-confidence dipped even lower. I kept likening it to me being Kerri Strug and needing to stick the landing. Everything was on her shoulders. She HAD to do it. This job was the only one in my prospects and I knew everything was riding on this. Our bills, our starting to save money again, our being able to breathe–and then I got the letter in the mail. I didn’t get it. I failed. Cue even more dipping of the self-confidence.

This was all my fault. I left work, without another job lined up–which I think is the craziest friggin’ thing to do, and now I couldn’t get the job that was going to save us. What did I do?! Again, this was a rough time y’all. I’ve been smiling through it all and not mentioning it on here, but I was not doing well. 😦

This is us after our celebratory “I just got a new job” dinner. 🙂

My hubby is a SAINT to have been putting up with me for past month. I was all rainbows & sunshine online, but in the real world, I was a big ‘ol Debbie Downer. When you don’t have a job, er, when you have a Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, and two nationally recognized personal training certifications and STILL can’t get a good job, you feel pretty doggone craptastic. So thank goodness for him for putting up with me.

I was near my wit’s end for sure when I finally happened to see that there was a position available for a Leasing Consultant in our old stomping grounds in Chapel Hill. I couldn’t believe. Seven years ago when we first moved to NC and our Leasing Consultant showed us our first apartment here, I remember saying to hubs, “That seems like a fun job. I think I’d like to do it someday.” Okay, flash forward to now. Yup, that’s my job!

But what about fitness? Haha, don’t worry. I didn’t forget about it. I love it too much for that. But not having a job in a gym, a sporting goods store or as a Wellness Director does not stop me from still being a Certified Personal Trainer. I’m going to keep up with my certification by taking continuing ed classes as necessary. I’ll still be here on Cherie Runs This. I’m still #FitFluential. I’ll still be just as crazy about fitness as I ever was. The only thing that has changed is the title of my day job. All else remains the same. 🙂

Okay, some other things have changed:

-I work Monday through Friday now.
-I work regular business hours now.
-I have vacation and sick time now.
-I make much more money than I made at Dick’s.
-I don’t have to work “clopens.” {Closing shift and then opening shift the very next day.}
-I work full time.
-I work near my husband and we can go out after work.
-My office is 2 miles from the trail that I love to run on and I can now run after work.
-I have holidays off.
-I get paid weekly.
-I get to use my Criminal Justice Associate’s Degree/attend court.
-I get to be active by walking the complex daily.
-I have my own office and it has a window with a great view.
-I can pay my bills without struggling.
-IT’S NOT RETAIL.

I happen to think all of that is pretty baller. Haa. There are a lot more but I figured I had to stop somewhere. I haven’t worked Monday – Friday, regular business hours, with vacation/sick time IN SIX YEARS. I forgot what it was like to know my schedule more than three days in advance. To be off with my family on holidays. To plan trips and use vacation pay to cover it.

I’m thinking quitting Dick’s worked out in my favor, don’t you? 🙂

So I totally am planning to take this weekend to get my priorities SET. I’m not used to working a full 40 hours and trying to squeeze in workouts, blogging, social media time, chores, home life, and me time. This is going to take some doing. And don’t even get me started on waking up early and being at work by 8. Y’all know it’s customary for me to wake up around 9!!! Heck, I don’t go to bed until 2am most nights! But I can do this. I’m excited and ready for the challenge and new beginnings.

And thankful. Very, very thankful. 🙂

Did you ever quit a job before you had another? How did it turn out?

Have you entered my giveaway yet? Today’s the last day. Give it a shot!

My mind is {on} racing.

Houston, we have a  Well, I don’t want to call it a problem. I mean, there are people out there with REAL problems. This is more of an issue. A bother. A stress-inducing freak out ready to happen on a Stage 4 level.

The races are coming. THE RACES ARE COMING and I’m still having IT Band/hip/Dead Butt Syndrome difficulties. STILL–even with all the ice, massage, rest, stretching, ibuprofen, and foam rolling in the world.

BUT, I was able to do this on Monday. I ran 3.1 run miles and then walked 3.1 miles. {Walked another 4 on Tuesday to keep it moving.} I did this with not too much discomfort, no pain really, but I knew if I ran even a smidgen more after that 5K, I would be hating life.

I’m trying to be okay with this–with these little baby steps back into running–but I miss it. I miss the tossing on my shoes, going out there and running the whole 6, 9, 13 miles and not feeling any sort of pain. At this rate, I’m wondering if I’m ever going to feel that again. How am I going to run a half marathon if I can barely get through 3 miles?!

The reminders are all around me. Besides all of my blogger and Twitter friends going on about their running feats {Hey, I’m not knocking them; I would be, too} I sit down to write this post and then this pops up on Twitter:

I click on the link and see the beautiful, yet simple, logo…

Ahh, look at the beautiful monuments in there. When I first heard about this race, I KNEW I had to be there running it. I am Nike obsessed, used to live in DC, am confident with the Half distance, my sister still lives there, so I’ll have a place to crash–it was going to be wicked awesome.

But the date. Ohhhh, the date. APRIL 28, 2013?!! CRAP. That is going to be ONE WEEK before another half marathon that I’m about to register for and REALLY wanted to race. This one–

I’m supposed to be there for that Half. The 5K in May was my very first race and I knew right after it that I’d race the Half next year. I used to work for Dick’s, I’m from Pittsburgh and couldn’t imagine not stepping up to the next level of this race. Yup, May 5, 2013, I’d BE there. Or so I thought. I honestly don’t know which to choose. I know the Nike one has a lottery and maybe I won’t win…but I seriously want to…

I’ve been setting my running goals and CRUSHING them. ME. The girl who endured endless taunting and teasing from her gym class teacher in high school, “Hart {my maiden name}–speed it up. Hart–keep running. Hart–c’mon! You can’t even make it around the track once without stopping! Ohh, Hart–you’ll never be a runner.”

Ohhh, you guys know all too well what comments like those do to me. FUEL!!

Obviously those comments are still in my head. They didn’t make me bitter; I use them to become better. And I did. But now, I feel like it’s all drifting away from me.

These two races aren’t even the main focus right now though. They’re for Future Cherie to deal with. Present Cherie is too busy figuring out how to make it through her immediate races.

The Color Run is coming on October 21 in DC. It’s a 5K, so I should be able to handle that just fine and it’s a little over a month away. My sister is running it with me, so the sheer excitement will keep me {and hopefully Ms. IT Band} going.

So the immediate reason for the freaking out and main purpose of this post?

This November 4th race means the world to me. It’s my first official half mary and I want to run the sh*t out it. I’ve been training for months, made sure I could run at least this distance two times now, and well, I paid for it. Money is tight and I most certainly don’t want it to have been wasted. And Wilmington is a special place for me and the hubs–we used to take anniversary trips there, but due to lack of extra dinero, we haven’t been there in about three years now. I was so looking forward to going there and running this race that I just can’t bear to miss it.

But I also don’t want the dreaded DNF on my racing résumé. Those three little letters scare me. I’m not a quitter anymore, I finish what I start. So knowing this, I don’t know what’s worse–to not attempt the race at all, start it, but bow out if I have to, or start it, muddle through the best I can and walk 3/4 of it? And if I walk a good chunk of it, would I finish in time? Haha, I’ve actually started power walking on the days that I know my leg won’t let me run–all with this in the back of my mind.

Again, a doctor, sports medicine professional, chiropractor, and masseuse are all financially out of the question for the moment. I plan to continue all the same self-treatments that I mentioned above, {as I do feel like they are helping a lot} but now, I’m asking for your stellar running advice, friends. What do you think? Is there anything else I should be doing to get this IT Band especially back in business before November 4th? Start the race anyhow? Should I drop out? Start and then stop? HELP! 😦

The Awesome Avocado & Mmmm Guacamole Recipe!

I have been on a serious avocado kick lately.

I’ve known for the longest time that they were good for me, but like a lot of people, I said, “Oh no, I can’t eat those! All those calories. All that fat! I work out too hard to gobble down avocados and just put the calories right back in me!”

Foolishness.

Yes, avocados are high in monounsaturated fats {and yes, cals}. But that is the kind you will hear people refer to as the “good” fat. This is because monounsaturated fats lower cholesterol {they lower the bad LDL and raise the good HDL} and there are a lot of studies out there that even vouch for monounsaturated fats in helping with weight loss. This info definitely bumped it high up there on my grocery list. But I still resisted for a bit.

I also noticed that I kept seeing avocados all over Instagram on the plates of people who have wicked awesome bodies. Hmm, they must be on to something. The final push came when I was reading through my January 1998 issue of Cosmopolitan {it has Cindy Crawford on the cover and I heart her, okay} that I saved all these years.

That was enough for me. If they were talking about the avocado way back in ’98 & people are still raving about them now, it was time to get some green goodness.

I posed the question on my Facebook page: What else do I do with avocados besides make guacamole?! I got the most fabulous answers ever. Y’all are a creative bunch! Look for the avocado pic in my pictures section over there and check ’em.

So I went to Trader Joe’s and picked up a bunch. I have been trying them out and loving the results:

in stir fries…
in salads…

But most of all, my favorite, still, hand-down, is in guacamole. The hubs and I LOVE it.

Since I get so many comments on it and questions about it, I knew it was time to share my recipe!

Mmmm Guacamole
(makes four servings}

2 medium to large ripe avocados
2 small diced tomatoes {I use Roma}
1/2 small diced onion
1 tbsp chopped cilantro {I use the tube variety}
1 tbsp lime juice
salt to taste

Peel avocados and break into small pieces. Place in bowl. Add all other ingredients–the tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime juice, and salt, to the same bowl.

Mash ingredients.

As you can see, I don’t have a proper avocado masher and must use the bottom of the feet of my chicken egg whisk. Hey, whatever works.

That’s it.  Of course, according to your taste, if you want to add more or less of some the ingredients, have at it. Spoon the guacamole into a pretty serving dish, or just eat out of the bowl. It won’t last very long if you have serious guac lovers in the house!

What’s your favorite use for avocados?
